The First Day

My last little bird left the nest this morning. He just took off. Walked out of the car, nervous and excited, and walked into big boy school all by himself and left me in the car alone. I went back to my quiet house and sat.

It’s a strange mix of emotions a momma has when her babies reach that place. Happy that they’re ready. Sad that those special days together are over. Nervous about what they might face. Fear that maybe you didn’t do enough. A surge of excitement for the many opportunities that have opened their doors to you. Anger because you just know those teachers are not going to be good enough. Insecure about your abilities as a momma. Jealous and fearful that they might like their teacher more than you.

What a wonderful creation God made when He created woman. He knew when he created her that she would experience all of these emotions and loves her BECAUSE of her ability to feel so deeply.

Momma, don’t shut those feelings out. Feel every single one of them and take comfort that God gave you every one of them to experience this life to the fullest.

“So with you: Now is your time of Grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”

—John 16:22, NIV

Jesus made this statement to comfort His disciples from what He had just told them. That He would have to leave them to go be with His Father.  Just like our babies left us this morning.

Grief is a funny thing. We experience all these emotions even though we know our babies are going to come home from school in a few hours. Grief speaks the language of the heart, not the language of the mind.

We will see our babies again, and we will rejoice, and no one will take that joy away from us!

My prayer for you today is that every day is as bittersweet as this one.

It is the experience of grief that allows us to experience the fullest of joy.

May we never become complacent in their goings and comings, That we always delight in the gift of being their momma. And that we experience the love of the Father who has the same emotions towards us that we do towards ours.

Be blessed this day.

You are loved
